MYXOMATOSIS is back.

This (man made) disease causes intolerable suffering to affected rabbits, for around 2, long, weeks.

We've found quite a few rabbits with myxomatosos around the Cottam area, a lot of them along Eastway and on Lightfoot Lane. A local farmer said the fieds are absolutely full of these poor rabbits.

It's fairly easy to tell if a rabbit has myxomatosis, you might notice the rabbit is unnaturally still. The rabbits eyes will be extremely swollen and matted shut with a gooey substance, the rabbits can't open their eyes to see, to move, and they'll simply let you pick them up. Their private areas are very swollen, extremely painful and they also suffer intense flu like symptoms.

(continued..) I thought the first one I saw was a large hedgehog in the centre of the road, then, another on the edge of the pavement, not moving at all.

So, if you take a rabbit with this disease to any vets they'll put it to sleep free of charge. Our vet said any veterinary surgery will do this free of charge.

If you see a rabbit with myxomatosis, please take it to a vets to be put to sleep.

If you have any questions, give me a ring.

Thanks, Rachel.
